Vinyl Plantation Shutters a Cheaper Alternative

Posted by GuestPoster | Other Home Accessories | Tuesday 31 August 2010 5:42 pm

If you love the look of plantation shutters but simply cannot afford to buy and install the more expensive wooden type, you may want to look into buying PVC shutters.  Contrary to what is often thought, they do not look cheap and in fact they can really add to a room’s appearance.

The most common type of PVC plantation shutters are white although it is also possible to buy different colored shutters. Traditionally, though, white is the preferred color of choice and for good reasons. Installing a white cheap plantation shutter on windows can give your room a real lift. They look clean and bright and can really lighten the overall tone and décor in a room.  The great thing with white, also is that it is not difficult to match with other furnishings as it goes well with most furniture and floor coverings. This also eliminates the need for changing your shutters every time you buy new furniture and allows you great freedom when redecorating as you do not need to worry whether your new furniture will match with your shutters.

They are also extremely easy to clean. You can simply dust them when you do your regular dusting and as the louvers are quite a bit wider than those found on venetian blinds, for example, they do not take that long to dust at all. In the event that they need a more deep cleaning you can simply wipe them down with a damp rag and then dry them off afterwards.

White PVC does tend to yellow if exposed to too much direct, bright sunlight. If you live in an area where this may be a problem you should look into treated blinds. These will not yellow if exposed to sun and will last much longer, thus it is worth the extra that you have to pay for this option. Alternatively you could put some tinted window film on the windows also to help protect the shutters.

Stairs Interior

Posted by GuestPoster | Other Home Accessories | Monday 30 August 2010 4:07 pm

Stairs in the interior of the house, is not just the connection between the floors of your house but it is a part of the theme on which your interiors are designed. The stairs design should be selected in accordance to the living room design, the point here is that it should synchronize well with the surroundings and the material chosen for the staircase has to match with the surroundings.

Wood is a material liked by everyone and you will not find two different houses having the same style and same shade of the wood. It can be polished as desired and can be easily treated to make it last long. Hard wood is generally used for the purpose as it gives a nice look to the stair treads and risers. Balusters and the stair hand railing is also fixed with the same category of wood. The best feature is that you may choose the wood strands too, obviously that would cost you extra, but it you want your interior stairs to be a unique, I would say go for it. Once you have installed the staircase it will last for at least a decade so why not choose the best one.

Now if you want to replicate the same with your exterior prefabricated stairs, I would suggest you not to, the external conditions will destroy the beauty of it in a year’s time.

Now if you don’t want to spend a lot on the staircase a much cheaper option is available wherein you can have the basic structure of your stairs in wood, as many cheaper variants of wood are available in the market. You can carpet the stairs, it is a very cheap and better option, whenever you need a change just get the new carpet installed and your staircase is as good as new. Some good things come cheap too.

How to Renovate a Beech Wardrobe

Posted by GuestPoster | Cupboard | Monday 30 August 2010 9:14 am

If you either have, or have located an old beech wardrobe that is in need of some repairs, there is one very simple way to restore the woodwork. It will take time but not a lot of money and it will look great once it is finished.  This will require you to strip the wood down in order to do it, but once done it can be kept up with fairly simply.

A mixture of linseed oil and turpentine, mixed in equal parts, makes a perfect finish for beech wood furniture, or any wood furniture actually. It is a fairly simple procedure although it is not something that can be finished in an afternoon.  It may take you longer than making a built in corner wardrobe for example, but that is mainly because you need to stretch the project out in order to allow the linseed oil to dry between sanding and re-coating.

The first thing that needs to be done is sanding. The wardrobe needs to be sanded down with the grain, not against it till the surface is clean and free of any former finishes.

Once that is done you should apply a mixture of equal parts of turpentine and linseed oil to the wood. Cover the whole wardrobe, making sure you get all parts covered and then leave it to soak in.  Once it is soaked in you should apply another coat. Keep applying coats until it is obvious that the oil mixture is not soaking into the wood any longer. This will take quite a few coats with beech wood, as the wood is naturally very absorbent (which is why it does not do so well in humid conditions.)

When you notice the wood has reached saturation point you should wipe the wardrobe down with a soft, lint free cloth and remove all the excess oil. Then, leave the oil to dry and the wood to harden. This may take a couple of days. Don’t rush it. Once it is dry you should again sand the wardrobe down and repeat the whole process again. Continue the process until the wardrobe is the color you want it to be.

This can be repeated again at intervals, whenever you feel the wardrobe needs refinishing or touching up again.  It does not take a lot of money but the time expenditure is fairly high. The great thing is that it will look fantastic when finished in this way; natural and a rich, wood grained look that will only get better with age.

Types of Wardrobe Sliding Doors

Posted by GuestPoster | Cabinet, bedroom furniture | Friday 27 August 2010 7:58 pm

Traditional closets may not necessarily be enough for your expansive clothing collection, so you might be considering additional wardrobe space fitted into an alcove within your bedroom. Normally, wardrobe sliding doors are the best way to access your clothing, as opposed to merely opening a set of hinged doors. With sliding doors, you merely slide to open and close. The sliding motion is effortlessly and silent running. These doors are very similar to the kind used in patio sliding doors, but with a lighter running mechanism. These door systems can be fitted into a space ranging from about 8 feet up to 15 feet.

The cost for these systems can vary largely due to the type of materials and finish that you select. The range of finishes includes mirror doors either in a silver or bronze. Colored glass is another popular choice and there is a range of colors to choose from. Another finish for the sliding doors is wood veneer. Numerous wood species are offered including oak, walnut, cheery to name but a few. The edges of the doors are fitted with a metal trim usually in aluminium. The trim also acts as a handle allowing you to slide the door open and close. These trims can also be colour-coded to match the finish on the door.

If you would like to purchase a new wardrobe system with sliding doors the most efficient and cheapest way is by searching online. There are numerous manufacturers out there that have websites that allow you to basically enter the dimensions of your room, select the finishes and the system will calculate all that is required for the complete installation together with the costs. Be sure to enter the dimensions correctly as these systems are made to measure and it is unlikely that the supplier will take back correctly supply goods. Shipping is usually added to the overall cost and it will be delivered to your home ready for installation. Installation of these systems is quite easy and can be fitted by you using some simple tools. An installation guide is usually provided. If you feel unable to install the doors yourself then it’s a matter of hiring the services of your local handyman.

It’s important to note that the manufacturers only supply the door panels, sliding mechanism and trims. The shelving and cupboard space at the rear of the doors will be your responsibility, so bear this in mind when ordering.

For further information about these systems and any other types of doors, go to Doors Dictionary for a comprehensive listing of everything about doors.

How to Buy Discount Teak Patio Furniture

Posted by GuestPoster | Outdoor furniture | Wednesday 25 August 2010 10:49 am

One of the best materials that you can use for furniture for your patio is teak.  Teak is resistant to nearly all forms of weathering and even insect damage because of the natural oils that are in the wood itself.  Unfortunately, teak wood isn’t cheap and can involve a significant investment on your part.  Fortunately, it’s not hard to find discount teak patio furniture if you know the right places to look and how to shop for it.  Here are a few hints to make sure you get the best furniture for your patio.

First, before you buy any teak furniture, make sure that you find out that it is approved by the Forest Stewardship Council.  If it’s not don’t buy the furniture, no matter how cheap it is.  Most teak today comes from plantations in tropical countries like Indonesia and Burma.  However, there are still some companies that cut down forests and sell old-growth teak among other products.  Losing these forests means the world loses a large amount of biodiversity.  Don’t be a part of the problem and buy plantation teak, which is just as durable and affordable.

After you’ve checked out the label on the wood, check out the merchant and the manufacturer.  Most discount teak products that you find will be online, so make sure that the merchant you’re buying the teak from is trustworthy and has a good return policy if you’re not happy with your purchase.  Also check out the manufacturer of the furniture itself.  Poor manufacturing techniques can result in shaky furniture, no matter how great the underlying wood is.

Finally, when you’re buying also see if you can get a good deal on the outdoor patio furniture cushions that you will need to go with your teak furniture.  These cushions will not only make the furniture more comfortable, but with the multitude of designs and patterns you can choose from, you’ll find that they can really add to your patio as well.

Use Red Curtains to Spruce Up a Room

Posted by GuestPoster | Other Home Accessories | Tuesday 24 August 2010 6:16 am

Window dressings are a big part of decorating a room and can do much to spruce up the decor. Red curtains will lend a vibrant bit of color to the window area, adding a touch of sophistication and style to the entire room.

Red window dressings can be used in any room of the house, if desired. Lighter shades will be more cheerful, and darker shades, such as wine or burgundy, will add a richness to the existing decor. If solid color red seems too dramatic for a particular room, then window dressings can be of a combination of complementary shades instead of just one solid bold color. Red and cream curtains would be appealing in a room that has a neutral color scheme and needs just a splash of vibrancy to brighten it up. And red gold curtains would be especially attractive in a living room with elaborate dark furniture and hardwood floors. Window dressings can also be chosen to match practically any other accessory in the room, such as a bedspread in the bedroom or throw pillows on the sofa in the living room.

If the decor of the room is light and neutral, a nice contrast would be a drape of a darker color. And if the room is decorated in darker shades, lighter colored drapes may be just what are needed to add a bit of brightness and airiness to the room. Too much of one thing can be overpowering, especially in a small area.

Choose window dressings carefully. The appropriate shade can add the finishing touch to an area of the house that needs that extra bit of color to tie everything together. And window dressings play a big role in making a room look complete, so do not be afraid to experiment with the use of a vibrant color in your decorating plans.

Queen Anne Furniture Design

Posted by GuestPoster | Cabinet | Tuesday 24 August 2010 3:28 am

The Queen Anne style furnishing was an item during the 18th century and is still a viable style of furniture found in many homes. The elegant Queen Anne design is graciously dubbed Queen Anne in honor of the English monarch, The House of Stuarts, in power 1702 -1714 respectively. Delegating the job of furniture to some of history’s best artist Queen Anne is given credit for this lovely styled furniture.

Queen Anne cabinet furniture is a reflection of the opulent living of the English gentry. Building furniture for the cream of English society designers were anxious to present a type of furnishing that was both elegant and comfortable. This was very different from the William and Mary furniture so sought after during the late sixteen hundreds era. Queen Anne furniture is rich and expressive furniture with beautiful distinctive carvings of the era. Which may account for its continued popularity in the furniture world of today.

Interesting aspects of Queen Anne furnishings are the leg designs. Curvatures in the furniture construction are a signature look of all Queen Anne chairs. The fashion of tables and chairs was much more straight lined in previous decades. Ornamental additions are also a high point of this period of furnishings. The use of absolutely beautiful wood only added to the beauty of the Queen Anne Style.

A variation of woods has been a part of the design of Queen Anne furniture. Out of all the woods chosen, cherry, maple and walnut, mahogany was the overruling favorite. The number one brand of furnishing from 1720 to 1760 found the road to the Americas. The style was upgraded and materials of fairer shades were favored but the essence of the style remained. Colonial homes found the Queen Anne design lovely and made it a part of the Early American Heritage. These early styles still exist and are reproduced time and time again by furniture manufacturers.

This artistic furniture style has withstood time. Signature designers developed fashionable furniture and placed it in the homes of the English aristocracy. Buying beautifully designed Queen Anne antiques takes a professional eye. Getting less than what you pay for is very easy to do. There are many less expensive reproductions on the market for a consumer that loves Queen Anne .This furniture has captured the essence of an era with fine furniture builders like Chippendale and Hepplewhite. Their generous use of fine wood is accentuated in the Queen Anne furniture style. Gorgeous antiques of the era can be seen in Colonial Museums today.
